Summary

Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country。 Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world。 As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's antiapartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule。 He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality。 LONG WALK TO FREEDOM is his moving and exhilarating autobiography, destined to take its place among the finest memoirs of history's greatest figures。 Here for the first time, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela tells the extraordinary story of his life--an epic of struggle, setback, renewed hope, and ultimate triumph。

100 years of books challenge - published in 1994"There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered。"This memoir is enlightening and long (700 pages, which is understandable since Mandela had 27 years in prison to write the majority of it)。 I learned fascinating things about the history of apartheid and how a relatively small group of white Afrikaans were able to rule by encouraging tribal groups to distrust and hate each other。 100 years of books challenge - published in 1994"There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered。"This memoir is enlightening and long (700 pages, which is understandable since Mandela had 27 years in prison to write the majority of it)。 I learned fascinating things about the history of apartheid and how a relatively small group of white Afrikaans were able to rule by encouraging tribal groups to distrust and hate each other。 This is so relevant today, as my own country is filled with anger, distrust and division。 It was interesting to realize how entrenched "apartheid thinking" was。 Mandela shared examples where he caught himself judging blacks as not as talented or capable as whites。I saw that Mandela was a complicated and nuanced person。 He certainly had flaws, and the way he eschewed nonviolent protest was controversial。 But, his story is fascinating and he had a front row seat to dramatic and important parts of world history。"Prison and the authorities conspire to rob each man of his dignity。 In and of itself, that assured that I would survive, for any man or institution that tries to rob me of my dignity will lose because I will not part with it at any price or under any pressure。" 。。。more

Picked this up after watching Invictus and realising I knew next to nothing about South Africa。 Read it slowly and not sure what else to say other than the obvious: wow, what a life!

I learned so much reading this book。 It was well written and a page turner, while being a true autobiography of an incredible human。 Could not more highly recommend

Amazing story。 This is a long book but it is so wonderfully written and so engrossing that it is easy to blow through very quickly。 I often think about what I read in this book, and about what an unparalleled life this man has led。

It made me cry。 The words I find describe Mandela best are integrity and loyalty。 I can’t think of anyone who has more of either。

Excelente biografia。 Muy inspiradora y emotiva。

Obviously, this is a really powerful and important story。 I feel bad not giving it a 5。 For meaningfulness, it obviously gets a 5。 That being said, it is pretty dry and hard to get through at points。

Took me a few months and it’s worth the investment。 There are lots of parallels between the US and South African history and government。 Nelson Mandela also discusses what it’s like to be a leader and the sacrifices made on every level。 It is an autobiography so there is lots of ‘first we went here, then there, then did this’ which could make the book dry; however, it very much humanized him。 I had goosebumps the last 50 pages as he made and continued his long walk。。。

I wanted to be blown away by this, but was underwhelmed by Mandela's writing style。 His story, and eyewitness account of turning points in modern history are incredible。 His thoughts on liberation struggle, and ability to link various forms of oppression together are still relevant。 However, I read this from my position as a father and husband; two roles he avowedly disregarded in favour of his work as a reformer and freedom fighter。 He wrote about this choice, but I felt he was presenting argum I wanted to be blown away by this, but was underwhelmed by Mandela's writing style。 His story, and eyewitness account of turning points in modern history are incredible。 His thoughts on liberation struggle, and ability to link various forms of oppression together are still relevant。 However, I read this from my position as a father and husband; two roles he avowedly disregarded in favour of his work as a reformer and freedom fighter。 He wrote about this choice, but I felt he was presenting arguments to protect his image, rather than truly wrestling with the impacts this had on his family。 These arguments rang hollow, and chauvanistic。 I appreciated hearing about his childhood and education, which he framed as an expanding political conciousness。 His role in traditional/tribal hierarchy and how this influenced his idea of leadership was instructive。 Much like his prison sentence, this book could have benefited from greater brevity。 。。。more

Reads like a novel。 So interesting to read about Mandela’s life leading up to and during his imprisonment。 Told honestly and in great detail。 Should be required reading in schools。

At over 750 pages I thought that this book might be a difficult read。 The reality was that it was both entertaining and educational。 It gives an excellent insight into the mind of Mandela and shows how good can prevail over evil。 In this day and age it is all too easy to abandon hope that good will prevail。 This book is inspiring。

At seven-hundred pages, I found this rather fascinating and couldn't put it down so it went by quick。 Definitely worth a read and more poignant now than when it was first released。 At seven-hundred pages, I found this rather fascinating and couldn't put it down so it went by quick。 Definitely worth a read and more poignant now than when it was first released。 。。。more

Amazing book about an amazing man! This is what authentic leadership is about。。。 Despite all the atrocities and injustices he suffered, he still led from the heart, believing that deep down, we are all good people。

I admit that I didn’t know much about Nelson Mandela and apartheid other than he was in prison for a long time and that apartheid was bad。 I listened to this in audio format and, though it took around 28 hours to complete, I appreciated hearing the names of people and places pronounced correctly。 What a lesson I have learned! Apartheid was as bad as Nazi Germany, only it lasted decades longer。 Because of his color, the first time Nelson Mandela was allowed to vote was in 1994, when he voted for his own party, a party that until shortly before that had been banned and branded a terrorist organization! He was in his 70s! He lived his entire life with courage, a fixed and immovable set of high ideals, generosity, and his goals always riveted on how he could aid “the struggle” against apartheid。 Even during almost 30 years in prison, he never allowed himself to wallow in self-pity or turn to thoughts of revenge。 He only ever wanted South Africa to be a place where all people, regardless of color, could enjoy the same freedoms。 Nelson Mandela was truly a visionary, a statesman, a diplomat, a revolutionary, and a model of leadership。 What he accomplished in South Africa was truly a modern miracle。 Highly recommend this book! 。。。more
